Less diesel, every day
Every ZEM system moves hours of work from diesel to batteries, safely, and for the whole life of the vessel.

Where the savings come from
Battery-electric ferries run their routes without burning fuel. Hybrid workboats and offshore vessels use the battery for peak shaving, so gensets run less and at their best load. On Viking Energy and Viking Queen that meant more than 20 % fuel savings.
A single e-BOX retrofit can save a workboat up to 100 tonnes of CO₂ and 20,000 to 40,000 litres of diesel a year, without rebuilding the engine room.

Safety
Zero safety events since 2015
ZEM helped DNV write its first guidelines for batteries on ships in 2010. Every system is designed to DNV marine safety requirements, and the battery space is part of the delivery.
- Marine type-approved battery systems, water-cooled and heated
- Sensors, ventilation and fire suppression in the battery space
- Remote monitoring and regular battery testing over the system's life

Life cycle
From first charge to recycling
We follow each system after delivery: battery testing and performance monitoring, software upgrades that keep it efficient, and responsible recycling and disposal when the batteries reach the end of their life.
Responsible business
As part of the Volvo Group, ZEM follows the Volvo Group Code of Conduct and asks the same of its suppliers through the Supply Partner Code of Conduct. Every year we carry out due diligence under the Norwegian Transparency Act.
