ZEM technology

One system, from battery to propeller

Batteries, propulsion, control and service from one integrator. More than a hundred projects delivered, backed by Volvo Penta's global network.

Why one integrator

A battery, a motor and a charger do not make a vessel electric. The system has to be engineered around how the vessel works: its route, its load profile, where and how fast it can charge.

ZEM has worked with marine batteries since 2010, helped write the first battery guidelines with DNV, and has had zero safety events since the first installation in 2015.

One ZEM system: batteries, the ZEM control cabinet, gensets for hybrid operation, electric propulsion, shore power and remote monitoring.

The four parts of the ring

Battery

Marine type-approved battery systems, water-cooled and heated, in NMC, NCA and LFP. Delivered with the battery space itself: sensors, ventilation and fire suppression.

33 kWh – 10 MWh

Driveline

Electric and hybrid propulsion that combines battery, charging, propulsion and auxiliary systems, with full integration of Volvo Penta components.

≤ 900 kW per motor

Control

ZEM master control and power management on a programmable PLC architecture, with remote access and live data. Charging from shore AC to megawatt charging.

up to 1.9 MW MCS

Service

One team from concept and engineering to commissioning, then remote support, battery testing, software upgrades and responsible recycling.

0 safety events since 2015

Battery

From 33 kWh to 10 MWh

Scalable battery systems, chosen for the vessel’s drive cycle and approved for marine use.

  • Marine type-approved NMC Flatpack and NCA Volvo Cube
  • LFP Power and Energy packs
  • All systems water-cooled and heated
  • Battery space designed by ZEM, with sensors, ventilation and fire suppression

Control

Master control and power management

One control system for the whole driveline, built on open industrial hardware so it can be serviced and upgraded.

  • Full integration of Volvo Penta components
  • Advanced power management across battery, gensets and shore power
  • Programmable PLC architecture
  • DC control systems in standard cabinets
  • Remote access and live data

Charging

From shore power to megawatt charging

Each vessel is tailored to the charging it will actually have at the quay.

Supported charging standards
AC chargingWith onboard transformers125 A · 400 V
DC fast chargingCCS2 · up to 350 kW
Megawatt charging L1MCS · up to 600 kW
Megawatt charging L2MCS · up to 1.9 MW

Driveline

Electric and hybrid propulsion

Propulsion motors and generators up to 900 kW each, combined with battery, charging and auxiliary systems into one driveline, with full integration of Volvo Penta components. Shown here in a high-speed ferry.

Hydrogen

Fuel cells in place of diesel gensets

In the Pilot E project, ZEM integrates PEM fuel cells that replace diesel generator sets on board.
